LAND DAYS: ORGANIC RED WINE

If you know me, you know i love my red wine. Preferably a whole bottle in my right hand (i've never been the classy, glass kind of wine-o). Since reading the book Skinny Bitch, which i talked about in my last [blog post], i've learned about the use of sulfites in wine. The book also taught me that organic wines have little if any added sulfites.

Sulfites are common in the food industry as an additive to increase food shelf-life by preventing bacterial growth. They are used in wines to stop the browning of whites as well as to quickly stop the fermentation process. Ten percent of people will have a reaction to sulfites. These reactions can include rashes, itching, restricted breathing, asthma attacks, hives and in serious cases anaphylactic shock.

Tonight, i bought my first organic red wine from the liquor store. It does say that it contains sulfites but since it's an organic wine i can count on the amounts being considerably lower than mass-produced red wines. Because i live in a smaller town, the liquor store doesn't have the biggest selection of wines let alone organic ones so i settled for the 'Parés Baltà: Mas Petit 2010.' This is a spanish wine, made in Penedès, Catalonia, Spain. It has a soft palette including red fruit and vanilla flavours with an alcohol content of 14%.

I actually like this bottle of wine. I was surprised since it's my first spanish and organic wine. I'm enjoying the fact that by choosing organic wines i'm limiting my intake of sulfites and being as healthy as possible even when i'm getting my 'drink on.' Another reason to love my red wine!
